What Are Veneers?
Veneers themselves are small, thin restorations that are designed to fit over the visible surface of individual teeth. Our office uses biocompatible, safe, and natural-looking dental materials to craft them from, like ceramic and porcelain, allowing you to enjoy beautiful, natural-looking results. Each veneer is cemented atop the natural, prepared tooth, making the overall smile appear whole, bright, and symmetrical.
The Process of Getting Veneers
Getting veneers typically takes place over the course of two to three separate appointments. First, Dr. O’Brien will discuss your treatment plan with you as well as answering any questions you may have before moving forward with preparing your teeth. Once you consent to the plan, he will remove a very small amount of enamel from the teeth that will be receiving veneers. This will allow them to lay flush with surrounding teeth, creating a more natural look. Then, before covering your prepared teeth with temporary veneers, our team will take impressions of them to send off to our dental laboratory.
We work with expert lab technicians to make sure that your veneers look lifelike in every way. Once they’re done being crafted, we’ll call you back in to make sure your permanent veneers are made to our specifications before removing your temporary ones and cementing them onto your teeth.
Benefits of Veneers
Veneers offer a wide range of benefits, including:
- Ability to restore the appearance of one, several, or all teeth affected by flaws.
- Versatile treatment that can address a range of imperfections at once.
- Durable restorations that offer lifelike results.
- The ability to last for 15 or more years with good hygiene and care.
Understanding the Cost of Veneers
Most dental insurance plans do not cover the cost of veneers due to the fact that they’re a cosmetic treatment and not necessary to maintain the health of your grin. However, there’s no need to be discouraged! Our team partners with CareCredit, a trusted, third-party financer that offers little-to-no interest monthly payment plans upon approval. Simply fill out their application and gain the ability to split the cost of your procedure into more manageable, smaller monthly amounts. Veneer FAQs
Are Veneers Permanent?
Technically, veneers are not permanent. The confusion often comes in because the word “irreversible” is used to describe them. However, this refers to the changes to your enamel which – although slight – cannot be undone. With all of that said, several studies have found that the large majority of patients enjoy their veneers for well over a decade. The best way to prolong the lifespan of yours is by taking good care of them and the rest of your smile. You can do so with healthy habits like brushing for a full two minutes each morning and evening, sticking to a well-balanced diet that’s low in added sugar, and not using tobacco products.
Is There Anything I Can’t Eat with Veneers?
We mentioned above that you should stick to a well-balanced diet that’s low in added sugar. This is important because overindulging on foods and drinks like soda, ice cream, and candy can result in tooth decay that needs to be addressed immediately and may even require your veneers to be removed. It’s also important to exercise caution with popcorn, tortilla chips, hard pretzels, and other crunchy foods that can chip both your teeth and your veneers.
Will I Still Be Able to Drink Coffee with Veneers?
If you’re one of those people whose morning doesn’t truly start until you’ve had your first cup of coffee, you might be wondering if you have to completely cut out this caffeinated beverage with veneers. Since the dental materials they are crafted from are stain-resistant, you don’t! Of course, your teeth that aren’t covered with veneers are still susceptible to stains, which is why we recommend continuing to use a straw. We also encourage our patients to keep sugar and other additives to a minimum to help prevent oral health problems, like cavities, from developing.
How Many Veneers Will I Need?
When you come in for your consultation at our Tulsa dental office, we will learn a bit more about the reason for your visit, including the imperfections you’d like to address and what your dream smile looks like. Only then can we make a recommendation. In some cases, patients really only need one to fix a noticeable chip. In other cases, 10 or 12 are needed to create a stunning new look.
Can You Whiten Veneers?
No, you cannot whiten veneers with over-the-counter products or professional treatments since they are crafted from materials like porcelain, not enamel. So, if you aren’t happy with the shade of your veneers – whether right away or years down the line – the best thing to do is talk to us so we can determine the best way to proceed.
