What Are Implant Dentures?

Traditional dentures rely on the shape and suction of your mouth to stay in place. Instead, implant dentures are supported by a series of small, screwlike posts that are surgically inserted into the jawbone for a strong foundation. This helps to keep your smile stable and long-lasting. Since dental implants replace the roots of the missing teeth, stimulating the jaw, you don’t need to worry about routine repairs and replacements. There are two main types of implant dentures. During your consultation, we will discuss which of the following is right for you.

Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures

A fixed implant denture is made to stay in place at all times. It can only be removed by a dental professional. In most cases, four to six strategically placed dental implants are replaced to hold permanent dentures. This is a preferred option by many because they act more like real teeth.

Removable Implant Dentures

Removable implant dentures, sometimes called “snap-on” dentures, are also held into place using dental implants. The difference is that they use clips or ball sockets to attach to them. This way, patients can take their dentures out as needed. This style of implant denture needs to be removed throughout the day for cleaning.

The Implant Denture Process

During your consultation, we will determine whether or not you are a good candidate for implant dentures. At this point, we can create a treatment plan that meets your needs. For some patients, preparatory procedures are needed before getting dental implants to improve the probability of success.

The dental implants are surgically placed into your jawbone. Then, they fuse to the surrounding bone tissue in a process called “osseointegration.” This can take up to six months. Next, we will place metal connectors called “abutments.” Your final denture is designed according to your needs and secured in place.
