How Does Ozone Treatment Work?
Ozone is a molecule that is comprised of three oxygen atoms bonded together. Unlike the oxygen we breathe, which is composed of two oxygen atoms, ozone cannot be inhaled. However, it can still be used to support your health because of its ability to kill harmful bacteria. When ozone is applied to tissues in the mouth, it results in a “transient oxidative burst.” Because the bacteria in the mouth are unable to defend themselves against the reaction, they die.
Who’s a Good Candidate for Ozone Treatment?
Ozone therapy can be used for a variety of different reasons. It may be beneficial to you if you have the following dental issues:
- Gum Disease: Gum disease is an infection of the gum tissue. When ozone is applied to the pockets between the gums and teeth, it can help fight the infection and encourage healing.
- Cavities: Most of the time, cavities are treated by removing decayed tissue and filling the tooth. Ozone can be used to kill bacteria inside a tooth, minimizing the need for drilling.
- Infected Tooth: Root canal treatment is necessary when a tooth is infected. Ozone can be used to thoroughly sterilize the tooth’s interior, reducing the probability of needing root canal retreatment in the future.
- Other: There has been evidence supporting the use of ozone to reduce dental sensitivity, promote healing after extractions, and more!
